REGION 16 — The Region 16 Board of Education last week approved an additional kindergarten teacher position at Prospect Elementary School for the 2017-18 school year due to increasing enrollment.

The additional teacher allows for five kindergarten classes at the school next school year. Superintendent of Schools Michael Yamin said kindergarten enrollment at Prospect Elementary stands at 91 with about 18 students in each class.

The position wasn’t in the 2017-18 school budget voters in the region, which oversees schools in Beacon Falls and Prospect, passed early this month at a district meeting. Yamin said the budget can absorb the cost of the position, which is about $65,000.
