REGION 16 — The cost for students to take a summer school course in Region 16 is going up.

Starting this summer, a class will cost $200, Superintendent of Schools Michael Yamin announced last week during the Board of Education meeting. The cost used to be $150 per class in the region, which oversees schools in Beacon Falls and Prospect.

Last year, 68 students took summer classes, according to Director of Curriculum Barbara Peck.

Yamin said raising the cost will make the summer school program self-sufficient. A minimum of eight students is needed to run a course, he said. At $200 each, he said, that would cover the cost of the class.

Yamin said the district would be willing to work with students if they need help paying, if they worked hard during the school year and something significant happened to cause them to fail a class.

“At the end of the day, if you’re doing your best and something happened, we’ll take care of you,” he said.
