NAUGATUCK — There’s a new golf pro in the borough.

The Board of Mayor and Burgesses this month unanimously approved hiring Bryan Nixon as the golf course/pro shop manager at Hop Brook Golf Course.

Nixon was hired under a one-year contract, which went into effect on March 8 and runs through March 31, 2018.

According to the contract, Nixon’s work year begins on April 1 and runs through Nov. 30.

During his scheduled work year, Nixon will work a 40-hour week and be paid $640 a week.

For any time Nixon works prior to April 1 or after Nov. 30, he will be paid a per diem hourly rate of $16, which is his base salary divided by 40, according to the contract.

Nixon is not eligible for benefits, such as paid sick days, vacation days, or health insurance.

Under the contract, Nixon is responsible for managing the daily operations and personnel at the course’s pro shop, enforcement of course rules, and working with the public.

The contract also allows for Nixon to use the course outside his normal hours for private golf lessons. During this time, Nixon is not acting as an employee of Naugatuck, and the borough is not responsible for any liability insurance related to the lessons, the contract stipulates.

According to his resume, Nixon graduated from the PGA of America golf management program. Nixon, a Naugatuck resident, worked as the assistant golf professional at Stamford’s E. Gaynor Brennan Golf Course since 2007.

The hiring of Nixon comes after the borough let the contract for Bob Clark, the former golf pro at Hop Brook, expire. Clark was hired in 2012.

Mayor N. Warren “Pete” Hess said Nixon was chosen from a pool of candidates, four of which were PGA golf pros.

“We were pleasantly surprised there were as many great applicants as there were,” Hess said.

Hess said Nixon was unanimously chosen as the nominee to bring before the board.

“He has great experience, great credentials, and he is a PGA pro,” Hess said.

  1. I wish my good friend Brian nothing but the best of luck at Hop Brook. But as long as you have members of the golf commission dictating what goes on down there no PGA Professional deserves that. We in the PGA of America are the experts in the business and know the golfing trends that are working or not. There are two members of the golf commission who think they know everything, and one of them talked negatively about me inside two local restaurants in Naugatuck, as well as talked golf commission business at a couples banquet Friday October 21. This person should be removed immediately, as the golf course will be better off without her. Brian if I can be of any help please let me know, I know the Nixon and Bournival family, as well as I, are rooting for you bud.
