REGION 16 — Before Region 16 rolls out the one-to-one device initiative in the district, officials will host a community forum on the plan.

The new initiative will provide all students in grades sixth through 12 with their own Chromebook to use in class. The Region 16 Board of Education, which oversees schools in Beacon Falls and Prospect, has approved a three-year plan to phase in the initiative.

The first phase will come late next week when all freshmen and sophomores at Woodland will receive their own Chromebooks. Over the following two school years, incoming freshmen will receive a Chromebook and middle school students will have access to new and existing district-owned devices, as well, in school. In subsequent years, all incoming freshmen will get a Chromebook.

“This initiative will be impactful, requiring a change in pedagogy for teachers, a change in how students learn and a trend towards personalized digital learning that increases student engagement and optimizes student centered instructional environments,” Superintendent of Schools Michael Yamin stated in a letter to the community.

Officials will hold a forum on Wednesday from 6 to 7 p.m. at Long River Middle School in Prospect to answer questions from the community on the initiative. Questions or concerns can also be directed to Yamin at 203-758-6671 or myamin@region16ct.org.
