REGION 16 — The number of students taking advantage of breakfast offered at Long River Middle School has drastically jumped so far this school year.

Statistics provided last week to the Region 16 Board of Education, which oversees schools in Beacon Falls and Prospect, showed the number of middle school students participating in the breakfast program from September through January of this school year increased 46.6 percent compared to the same time period during the 2015-16 school year. The report showed 1,917 students participated the first five months this school year compared to 1,024 students during the same time last school year.

The number of Woodland Regional High School students participating in the school’s breakfast program increased slightly to 4,681, or just 1.5 percent, from September through January of this school year compared to the same time period during the 2015-16 school year.

The breakfast program at Long River is relatively new, while Woodland has had one for some time. The school board implemented the program at Long River in the fall of 2013.
