SEYMOUR — The Naugatuck Valley Health District is accepting applications for its Naugatuck Valley Emends Lead Hazards program.

The organization is distributing $2.9 million in lead hazard control and healthy homes grants from the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development.

The district is partnering with the Connecticut Children’s Healthy Homes Program to protect children before they are poisoned by lead hazards or injured by safety hazards in their homes.

The program provides qualified homeowners and tenants with inspections and plans for lead and home safety hazard removal and financial assistance to remediate hazards.

The grants are available to residents of Ansonia, Beacon Falls, Derby, Naugatuck, Seymour, and Shelton who lived in privately owned housing built before 1978. The occupants must make an income less than 80 percent of the area median income. For owner-occupied homes, a child under the age of six must reside or spend significant time in the home.

Applications are available at nvhd.org/NauVEL.
