NAUGATUCK — A pedestrian was killed after being struck twice Thursday evening by two different vehicles traveling on Route 8’s northbound and southbound lanes near exit 27, the Maple Street exit, according to state police.
Police did not identify any of the parties involved — the victim nor the drivers of the two vehicles — as of this post.
The incident occurred at approximately 5:33 p.m.
State police said a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle traveling on Route 8 northbound. After that initial impact, the pedestrian was struck by an additional vehicle traveling on the southbound side, state police said.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, and there were no further injuries suffered by either driver involved, according to police.
The second vehicle involved appeared to be a late-model sedan. That driver, who appeared to be a male, stayed on-scene. The body of the crash victim was covered by a white sheet.
Traffic was backed up for more than a mile and at a near-standstill as traffic was closed off for more than two hours between exits 27 and 26, and vehicles diverted off the highway first at exit 27, and later exit 28.
Naugatuck police rerouted traffic diverted off Route 8 through the borough’s downtown.
The victim’s next-of-kin was notified, state police said. The case remains active and under investigation. Any witnesses are asked to contact State Police Troop I Bethany at 203-393-4200.
