To the editor,

On Sunday, Nov. 20 the Naugatuck Historical Society held a program on Lucy Stone, the Suffragette, at the Neary Ballroom. The presenter, Judith Kalaora, was superb. What made this event even more outstanding was the amount of collaboration and the generosity of others in the community that made it all possible.

The event itself was co-hosted by the Women’s Study Club and the Naugatuck Woman’s Club. The food was provided by these two clubs and the historical society and included some amazing tea sandwiches and baked goods. The venue was donated by the Law Offices of Fitzpatrick, Mariano and Santos along with the Law Offices of Morrissey, Morrissey and Mooney.  Tea was provided by Bigelow Tea. These corporate sponsors are not new to the Naugatuck Historical Society. We have been fortunate that they have supported our work in many ways over the years. The Connecticut Community Foundation gave us a grant to cover a portion of the cost of the speaker.

The historical society is currently in a temporary location on Church Street while we await the first phase of renovations at the Tuttle House. Most of our supplies are in storage and were not retrievable for this event. On very short notice, the Elks Club #967 came through with cups and saucers for us to use. The Continental Room loaned us coffee and tea carafes for each of the tables. St. Michael’s Church lent us folding chairs for our audience of 50. We had a sold out show.

The event was a fine example of what this community is capable of when we all work together. I am extremely grateful to all who came forward to help make this event, and so many others like it, a success.
