NAUGATUCK — The Department of Public Works issued a reminder to residents of its policy regarding mailboxes damaged during snow removal.
Under the policy, the borough will not repair mailboxes or posts unless they are damaged by a borough vehicle or plow actually leaving the road and making contact with the box or post.
The borough will also not replace a mailbox if it is fewer than six inches from the edge of the road, and is not responsible for mailboxes damaged by flying snow or ice from plows while clearing roads.
It is the responsibility of property owners to install and maintain mailboxes and posts in a condition that can withstand flying snow and ice, the policy states.
Mailbox repairs or replacements will be made using standard pressure treated wood posts and a standard metal box. Expensive decorative mail boxes that are damaged and for some reason cannot be replaced with a standard box and post will be referred to the borough’s insurance carrier.
Upon request, the department will review the damage and perform warranted repairs. Any unresolved complaints can be referred to the Street Commission. For more information, call 203-720-7071.
