NAUGATUCK — Armand J. Celentano, 89, the husband of Nancy (Reynolds) Celentano, died peacefully on Monday, Aug. 1, 2016 at Yale New Haven Hospital with his loving family by his side.

Armand was born in Newark, N.J., on June 21, 1927, a son of the late Vito and Caroline (Mancini) Celentano, and had lived in Naugatuck for the past 21 years. Armand worked most of his life as a union painter, retiring in 1992; and was a life member of the Painters & Allied Trades International Union. As a young man, Armand joined the P.T. Barnum Circus and during the Hartford fire on July 6, 1944, his efforts helped save lives. He served in the U.S. Merchant Marines and enjoyed horses, painting, stamp collecting and dancing. Armand was a caring person who enjoyed taking risks and he took pride in teaching valuable life lessons.

Besides his wife Nancy, Armand is survived by his stepdaughter, Candi Crouse and her husband, Edward Buehler of Naugatuck; his sister, Dorothy Ferrante; his brother, Michael Celentano; two grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and his step-grandchildren, Nicole, Steven, Kevin and Miranda; many nieces and nephews. Armand was predeceased by his son, Michael.

A funeral service will be held Thursday, Aug. 4, 2016 at 6:30 p.m. at the Buckmiller Thurston Mengacci Funeral Home, 82 Fairview Ave., Naugatuck. Calling hours are Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m.
