NAUGATUCK — The cost of playing recreational sports in Naugatuck is set to go up for adults.

The Park Commission has approved charging a per player field usage fee for all adult leagues in the borough. The fees, which go into effect on Jan. 1, will be $10 for Naugatuck residents and $15 for non-residents.

Park Commission Chairman Linda Ramos said the change was made in order to raise money to help pay for maintaining fields.

“The Park Commission discussed this item and realized that with all surrounding towns charging for adult leagues to use their fields, Naugatuck must also come on board with the same procedure,” Ramos said. “Naugatuck has many adult leagues using our fields, so with the charge per person, based on resident or non-resident, it will help to defray upkeep and equipment for the fields.”

According to Ramos, there are currently 16 adult leagues that play in Naugatuck.

Once the change goes into effect, any adult team based in Naugatuck will have to submit a roster with proof of residency for each player. The commission has invited players to come to its next meeting at 6 p.m. Aug. 10 to discuss any concerns they have with the fees.

In addition to the fees, the commission made a change to slightly lengthen the spring and summer season, which previously had to be finished by Aug. 15.

Under the new rules all league play, including make-up games and playoffs, must be completed by the third weekend in August.
