NAUGATUCK — The borough is hosting Titanium Day this month to raise awareness of Safe Haven of Greater Waterbury and the services the organization offers to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.

The family-themed event is July 14 from 6 to 9 p.m. on the Naugatuck Green and will include face painting, food trucks, cotton candy and popcorn.

The evening will also include a Purple Man Beauty Contest. Male contestants will dress in their most outrageous, but appropriate, purple outfit. The winner will receive round trip airfare to Chicago for two, an overnight hotel stay and dinner at Ditka’s Restaurant with former coach Mike Ditka. The entry fee is $25 and all the proceeds benefit Safe Haven of Greater Waterbury.

Naugatuck Mayor N. Warren “Pete” Hess thought of the idea for the event after hearing Becky Rutrough speak during the United Way of Naugatuck & Beacon Falls’ annual meeting in March, a letter from Safe Haven stated.

Rutrough, a Naugatuck resident, spoke of enduring an abusive relationship at the meeting before she found the help she needed in 2007 at Safe Haven of Greater Waterbury.

Hess will present Rutrough with a proclamation at the event declaring July 14 “Titanium Day” in Naugatuck.

Safe Haven is seeking sponsors for the event. For more information on the event or to become a sponsorship, call Safe Haven at 203-575-0388.
