NAUGATUCK — There has been a change of plans — the Route 68 bridge will remain open this weekend.

The state Department of Transportation announced earlier this week that the bridge, which connects Bridge Street to Prospect Street, would be closed due to an ongoing rehabilitation project. On Friday morning, the DOT issued a release stating the bridge will not be closed, though work will continue.

The $12.8 million rehabilitation project, which started in April, includes replacing the existing concrete bridge beams with high-strength weathering steel, full replacement of the existing concrete deck, reconstruction of the bridge set at both abutments, reconstruction of existing wing walls and various repairs to the existing five piers. Extensive utility relocation is also included in the plans, according to DOT.

The project is expected to last until November 2018. Lane and road closures are anticipated to occur, at times, through the duration of the work.
