NAUGATUCK — Josephine (Schienda) Bertothy, 90, widow of Ernest J. Bertorthy, Sr., passed away peacefully at Beacon Brook Health Center on Sunday April 10, 2016.

Mrs. Bertothy was born in Beacon Falls on Aug. 20, 1925, daughter of the late Joseph and Helena (Spryszynski) Schienda. A longtime resident of Naugatuck, she retired from the footwear division of Uniroyal after many years of service.

Josephine was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church and a member of the parish Altar Society. She was deeply religious, and her true calling was her devotion to her church and family. A woman of faith, hope and charity, Josephine enjoyed, most of all, spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was also a Columbiette with the Knights of Columbus, and an avid gardener and bingo player. She will be missed by all.

Mrs. Bertorthy is survived by her two sons, Ernest J. Bertorthy Jr. of Naugatuck and James J. Bertothy and his wife Marie of Bar Harbor, Maine; her daughter, Susan E. Sylvestre and Kurt Mueller of Watertown; her sister-in-law, Cathy Schienda of Millerton, N.Y.; her four grandchildren, Ernest Bertothy III, Laurie Gosselin, Steven Sylvestre, and Kimberly Stewart; her five great-grandchildren, Margo, Madison, and Jillian Gosselin, Matthew and Lydia Sylvestre, and Penelope Stewart, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers, John, Walter, Chester and Raymond; her sisters, Barbara and Helena; her daughter-in-law, Jean Bertothy; and son-in-law, Thomas Sylvestre.

The family would like to thank the staff at Beacon Brook and Athena Hospice Care for the kind and compassionate care given to Josephine during her illness.

Her funeral will be held on Friday, April 15, 2016 at 10 a.m. from the Naugatuck Valley Memorial/Fitzgerald-Zembruski Funeral Home, 240 North Main St., Naugatuck, to St. Mary’s Church, 338 North Main St., Naugatuck, for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow in St. James Cemetery. Family and friends may call from 9 to 10 a.m. on Friday at the funeral home.
