NAUGATUCK — Benedita Tavares Oliveira, 96, the widow of Joaquim Oliveira, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 16, 2016 at Glendale Center surrounded by her loving family.

Mrs. Oliveira was born on June 8, 1919 in Portugal, a daughter of the late Manuel Fonseca and Ana Tavares Rebimbas Fonseca. She was a long time Naugatuck resident having emigrated from Portugal in 1968. She was a former employee of the Naugatuck Glass Company, having retired in 1984 and she was a dedicated communicant of Our Lady of Fatima Church. Mrs. Oliveira was known to all as a kind and inspirational person. She enjoyed gardening, sitting in the sun and sharing life stories. Spending time with her family of whom she was most proud was one of her greatest joys. She will be deeply missed.

Mrs. Oliveira is survived by her daughter, Maria Amador; her son, Joaquim Oliveira and his wife Gloria Oliveira; her son, Manuel Oliveira and his wife Julia Oliveira; her daughter, Olimpia Vieira and her husband Manuel Vieira; her daughter, Benedita Cruz and her husband Jose Cruz; her son, Isidro Oliveira and his wife Maria Oliveira; her daughter-in-law, Maria Dos Anjos Oliveira; 17 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband and her parents, Mrs. Oliveira was predeceased by her two sons, Jose Oliveira and Antonio Oliveira; her brothers, Isidro, Jose and Antonio Fonseca; her sisters, Maria do Rosario Caneira, Elvira DaSilva and Olimpia Ruela and her son-in-law, Francisco Amador.

The family wishes to sincerely thank the wonderful staff of Glendale Center for the compassionate care and support they provided Mrs. Oliveira, and the family.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, March 22, 2016 at 2 p.m. at Our Lady of Fatima Church, 2071 Baldwin St., Waterbury. Everyone attending the Mass is kindly asked to go directly to the church. Burial will be in Cemiterio do Murtosa, Murtosa, Portugal. Calling hours are Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Buckmiller Thurston Mengacci Funeral Home, 82 Fairview Ave., Naugatuck.
