NAUGATUCK — Police are reminding residents to be vigilant when it comes to solicitors.

Police received two reports Thursday regarding solicitors. The first came from a resident on Andrew Avenue who reported a man came to his house at about 1 p.m. stating he was from Direct Energy.

The second came about four hours later from a Lincoln Street resident who reported a man wearing an Eversouce shirt knocked on his door but didn’t have any credentials when asked to provide them, police said.

The resident told police he turned the man away and didn’t see him stop at any other homes, police said.

Solicitors are required to obtain a permit from the police department. Naugatuck police spokesman Lt. Bryan Cammarata said it wasn’t known whether the men on Thursday were legitimate solicitors. However, he said, police didn’t have any record of solicitors out on Thursday.

Police advised residents to be wary when someone comes to their home unsolicited. There are scams that involve people claiming to be solicitors to gain access to a home in order to rummage through the house and steal items.

If residents find themselves in a similar situation, police said they should ask for identification and a copy of the solicitors permit. Residents should also make a note of the car being driven and the person’s description.

If anything seems suspicious, residents should call the police department at (203) 729-5221.
