NAUGATUCK — Ruth Grace (O’Neil) Weaving passed away on Feb. 18 in Wolcott. She was a long time resident of Naugatuck and Watertown.

Ruth was born in New Haven, on March 30, 1922 to parents John and Katherine O’Neil. She spent her early years in East Haven and North Haven and graduated from East Haven High School. In September of 1941, Ruth was married to Russell “Russ” Weaving of Naugatuck until he passed away in June of 1993.

Ruth was a devoted mother and homemaker who later in life joined her husband Russ in running their retail store, The Naugatuck Sport and Toy Store, on Church Street in Naugatuck.  Throughout their 52 years of marriage Ruth supported Russ through his many years of community involvement and service. She was an active partner as Russ served as president of the Naugatuck Rotary Club and district governor of Rotary District 0798. Together they opened their home to and sponsored many Rotary exchange students as well as Up-With-People students from various parts of the world. As the years went on they traveled often, many times visiting these students and their families.

Ruth was happiest when surrounded by her family. She is survived by her daughter Patricia Bilafer and her husband Robert of Berlin; her son David and his wife Georgette Orlando of Hopewell Junction, N.Y., and her daughter Sandra Broden and her son-in-law William of Watertown. She adored her eight grandchildren and their spouses and her 12 wonderful great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother John “Jack” O’Neil of Stuart, Fla. Ruth was pre-deceased by her sisters, Rita Bradley and Doris Baribault, and by her daughter-in-law Kristina Weaving.

The family plans to have a memorial service for Ruth in the near future. The Alderson-Ford Funeral Home of Naugatuck, 201 Meadow St., is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Donations to honor Ruth’s memory can be made to The Rotary Club of Watertown, “Special Needs Accessible Playscape,” P.O. Box 88, Watertown, CT 06795.
