NAUGATUCK — Almerinda A. Afonso, 89, the widow of Alexandrino Afonso, died peacefully on Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2016 at Glendale Center.

Almerinda was born on Nov. 8, 1926 in Covelo, Spain, a daughter of the late Mauricio Tielas and Clara Fontan Tielas and split her living years between Lisbon, Portugal and Naugatuck. She was a former employee of the footwear division of Uniroyal, Inc., a parishioner of Our Lady of Fatima Church and a past member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Clube Uniao Portuguesa.

Her life revolved around people. She was at her best when surrounded by family and friends. She loved to read, music, movies and travel. And most especially children. She leaves a legacy of unmatched generosity and selflessness.

Almerinda is survived by her son, Rui Afonso and his wife Susan of Shrewsbury, Mass.; her son, Carlos Afonso and his wife Francine of Naugatuck; her grandsons, Alexander Afonso and Christopher Afonso and her niece, Anne Pereira. In addition to her husband and her parents, she was predeceased by her sister Sara Fortunato.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the Glendale Center and its staff for their wonderful care over the last few years.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, March 12, 2016 at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Fatima Church, 2071 Baldwin St., Waterbury. People are asked to meet directly at the church. Burial will follow in St. James Cemetery. There will be no calling hours.
