NAUGATUCK — A fire damaged a home at 70 Melbourne Court in Naugatuck Saturday afternoon.

The homeowner reported the fire at 2:43 p.m. after pulling into her driveway and noticing that the side of the house was on fire, Fire Capt. Mike Chatfield said.

When firefighters arrived there was smoke coming from the first and second floor windows, Chatfield said. They extinguished the fire before it could spread from the kitchen, but there was smoke and heat damage throughout the house.

Two people who live there have been displaced, as the building is uninhabitable, Chatfield said.

As of Monday the building remained uninhabitable and the two residents had been relocated, Acting Deputy Fire Marshal Robert Weaver said.

Weaver said the fire started in the kitchen, near where a trash can had been. The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation, he said.
