NAUGATUCK — The public will get a chance to have its say about a proposed dog park during a public hearing next month.

The Zoning Commission last week accepted the plans for the construction of a park, which includes a dog park and community garden, on borough-owned land off of Andrew Mountain Road.

The plans were forwarded to the Planning Commission for its review. The Zoning Commission scheduled a public hearing on the proposal for its March 16 meeting.

The entire parcel of land is approximately 146 acres. The site plan accepted last week includes a fenced-in three-acre dog park, about 40 parking spots and a community garden. Officials also want to build athletic fields and walking trials on a portion of the land in the future.

The cost of the park is expected to be approximately $50,000. Mayor N. Warren “Pete” Hess previously said that the funds will come from unused money in the borough’s Local Capital Improvement Program grant. The borough currently has approximately $200,000 of unused money in the account from the previous five years and is expecting to receive a $250,000 grant this year.
