BEACON FALLS — A 17-year-old Woodbridge resident was in critical condition at Hartford Hospital Sunday after being involved in a car accident in Beacon Falls Saturday night.

At 9 p.m., emergency crews were called to Blackberry Hill Road near Oakwood Drive after reports of a single car crash. They found that a car had struck a traffic sign and a utility pole, causing the pole to snap.

The driver, Saldi Hyska, of Woodbridge, was pinned inside the car, police said.

Firefighters from Beacon Hose Company No. 1 used the Jaws of Life to remove the roof and the driver’s side door to assist in removing Hyska. The extrication took 12 minutes, said Jeremy Rodorigo, spokesman for the volunteer fire department.

Beacon Hose Ambulance transported Hyska and his two passengers, Ryan Guarino, 17, of Woodbridge, and Matthew Johnson, 17, of Bethany, to Waterbury Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Hyska was treated at Waterbury Hospital’s trauma center and was transported to Hartford Hospital due to the extent of his injuries.

Rodorigo said speed was a factor in the accident. It is being investigated by Connecticut State Police.

No charges had been filed as of Sunday and the crash remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact state police at the Troop I barracks in Bethany at (203) 393-4200.
