NAUGATUCK — Alcides “Al” Carreira, 68, the husband of Maria Leonor Campos, passed away on Jan. 6, 2016 at Yale-New Haven Hospital with his family by his side.

Mr. Carreira was born in Mire de Aire, Portugal, on March 30, 1947, a son of the late Francisco Carreira and Maria da Conceicao Trindade Carreira and had lived in Naugatuck for most of his life. He worked as a self-employed electrical contractor and he also enjoyed helping out with various community projects. He had a passion for gardening and for tending to flowers in his yard. He was a member of the Club Uniao Portuguesa and was a parishioner of Our Lady of Fatima Church. He was an organ donor recipient and he was involved with volunteering and supporting other transplant patients. A former professional soccer player in France, Al was a soccer enthusiast who played for and coached the Naugatuck Portuguese Club soccer team.

In addition to his wife of Naugatuck, he is survived by his sons, Lucas Carreira of Meriden and Sergio Carreira of Naugatuck; his son by wish, Pedro Silva of Naugatuck; his sister, Maria Jose Silva and her husband Manuel DaSilva of Prospect; his brothers, Jorge Carreira and his wife Celeste Carreira of Middlebury and Arthur Carreira and his wife Beth Carreira of Naugatuck; his four grandchildren, Jonathan Carreira, Tyler Carreira, Jordan Carreira and Dylan Carreira and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2016 at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Fatima Church, 2071 Baldwin St., Waterbury. Those planning on attending the Funeral Mass are kindly asked to go directly to church. Calling hours are Monday, Jan. 11, 2016 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Buckmiller Thurston Mengacci Funeral Home, 82 Fairview Ave.

In lieu of flowers, contributions to honor Mr. Carreira’s memory may be made to the Yale Heart Transplant Association.
