No water means no school for Woodland

BEACON FALLS — Woodland Regional High School students will have an unexpected four-day weekend due to a broken sprinkler head in the pump house that has left the school without water.

Woodland will be closed Thursday and Friday so repairs can be made to the water delivery system. All other schools in Region 16, which oversees schools in Beacon Falls and Prospect, will be open as normal.

The issue was discovered after a fire alarm went off at the school at about 12 p.m. Wednesday, according to Superintendent of Schools Michael Yamin.

There was no fire. The cause of the fire alarm was traced back to a sprinkler head that broke in the pump house, Yamin said. The burst sprinkler flooded the pump house causing the drive that activates the main water pump that feeds water to the school to burn out, he said.

It’s unclear whether the sprinkler head was frozen or defective, Yamin said. Repairs are expected to be made on Friday when new parts arrive, he said.

Yamin expects Woodland to be open on Monday.

“We’ll do everything we can to make sure school is open for Monday,” he said.

Students and staff finished out the remainder of the school day following the fire alarm Wednesday. All afterschool activities were canceled. The girls basketball game originally scheduled to be at Woodland Wednesday night was moved to Kaynor Tech in Waterbury.
