REGION 16 — The Region 16 Board of Education has chosen Sheryl Feducia to be its chair for the next two years.

Feducia, 49, was elected chair over Priscilla Cretella Dec. 16 during a special meeting prior to the board’s regular meeting.

The Board of Education oversees schools in Beacon Falls and Prospect. The chairmanship of the board rotates between a member from Beacon Falls and Prospect following municipal elections. The chair has to be a Beacon Falls board member for the next two year.

Feducia and Cretella, who served as vice chair the past two years, were both nominated to be chair. Feducia was elected by a 6 to 2 vote. Cretella voted for herself. Beacon Falls board member David Rybinski voted for Cretella, as well.

Feducia, who is an eligibility services specialist for the state Department of Social Services, is going into her 17th year on the board. She served one term previously as chair.

Following last week’s meeting, Feducia said she’s very proud to have been elected chair, and for the support shown her by the board and both communities over the years. She said there have been issues facing the board that have been tumultuous at times and she tries to bring cohesiveness to the board in a calm and orderly fashion.

Feducia said her priorities include keeping the budget in line while offering the best services for students and staff, and to ensure there is parity in the region in both towns.

“I’m looking forward to working with both towns … to move forward in a positive direction for the region financially as well as educationally,” she said.

Prospect board member Robert Hiscox was elected vice chair. Beacon Falls member Christine Arnold and Prospect board member Nazih Noujaim were elected secretary and treasurer, respectively, to round out the slate of officers.
