PROSPECT — The town has its sights set on a piece of land that abuts Town Hall.

A town meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Oct. 6 at Community School, 12 Center St., to discuss and vote on the purchase of the property at 5 Cheshire Road.

“It’s been our policy for several years to buy property that comes up for sale bordering other town properties,” Mayor Robert Chatfield said.

The property, which borders the southeastern portion of Town Hall land, is approximately 1 acre with a 768-square-foot house on it.

The property is appraised at $174,111, according to online property records. The town plans to buy the land for $170,000.

Chatfield said payment for the house would be made in three equal installments over the next two years. The first payment would be paid at the time of the signing.

The money for the first payment would come from the town’s fund balance, Chatfield said. The next two payments would be made after the start of the 2016-17 and 2017-18 fiscal years, he said.

If residents approve the purchase, Chatfield said the town plans to use the property to expand parking at Town Hall.

The town would also look into making a driveway out onto Cheshire Road, Chatfield said. There is currently only one entrance and exit onto Prospect Road that is shared by Town Hall and Long River Middle School. The additional egress would alleviate some of the traffic congestion, he said.

Chatfield said if residents have any questions before the town meeting they can call his office at (203) 758-4461.
