PROSPECT — The Volunteer Fire Department of Prospect is one of 32 local fire departments in the state that the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection will award Volunteer Fire Assistance Grants to train personnel and buy firefighting equipment.

The grants are through a federal program to support fire departments in towns with a population of less than 10,000. The Prospect fire department will receive $872.46 through the program this year.

All projects must be completed by February. The funding is a matching reimbursable grant. Fire departments will be reimbursed up to 50 percent after they spend the funds.

Fire department applications are scored based on the number of calls the department responded to during the previous year, the town’s insurance rating and whether there is a plan in place to improve it; the percentage of the fire department budget that is paid for by town taxes, and recent history of receiving the VFA grants.
