Obituary: Edward Ciesla

NAUGATUCK — Mr. Edward Ciesla, age 83, died peacefully at home on Sunday, Aug. 9, 2015 with his loving family by his side. He was the husband of 55 years of Shirley (Heavens) Ciesla.

He was born in Coventry, R.I. on March 6, 1932, the son of the late Jacob and Anna (Kusiak) Ciesla.

Edward graduated from Coventry High School and received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in chemical engineering from the University of Rhode Island. He was a member of the Engineering Honor Society and Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity while at URI He later received his professional engineer’s license.
While at URI, he was a member of the Army ROTC and upon graduation he received a commission as a 2nd Lt. in the U.S. Army. He was stationed at the Army Chemical Center in Maryland and was honorably discharged in 1957 as a 1st Lt.

Edward worked for Uniroyal Chemical (now Chemura) for 42 years. He was a project engineer responsible for building several chemical plants in Louisiana and India. His work took him to many countries including South Africa, Russia, China, Japan and India. He traveled extensively with his wife visiting all 50 States, all of Western Europe, several Eastern European countries, as well as the Caribbean. He was a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, American Association of Cost Engineers, Uniroyal Men’s Club and the Naugatuck Exchange Club. He was a baseball and softball coach in the Peter J. Foley Little League. He was an avid Boston Red Sox and UConn men’s and women’s basketball fan.

Besides his wife Shirley, he leaves his son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Debra Ciesla of Granby, Mass.; his daughter, Cara Jeanne Ciesla of Plantsville; and his grandson, Ian Ciesla of Granby, Mass. He also leaves several nieces, nephews and cousins in the Rhode Island area. He was predeceased by his parents and two brothers, Thaddeus Ciesla of Coventry, R.I., and Edwin Chesler of Riverside, R.I.

The family wishes to thank the staff of VITAS Hospice at Home for their compassion and loving care of Edward, especially Jean, Lori, Heidi and Jeremy.

A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, Aug. 14, 2015 at 11 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 318 Church St., Naugatuck. Everyone is asked to please meet directly at the church. Burial will be in St. James Cemetery, Naugatuck. There are no calling hours. Prospect Memorial Funeral Home, 72 Waterbury Road, Prospect, is in charge of arrangements.
