WATERBURY — Two young people from Prospect died after a motorcycle they were riding crashed into a utility pole between Saturday night and Sunday morning.

Matthew Szyndlar, 19, and Kerri Rogoz, 20, were found unresponsive by a motorist near woods on the side of Captain Neville Drive about 6 a.m. Sunday, police said. They were pronounced dead at the scene.

Police determined Szyndlar was driving a 2004 Yamaha motorcycle westbound with Rogoz on the back sometime late Saturday or early Sunday. A police investigation determined that Szyndlar failed to negotiate a turn and struck a utility pole at high speed, police said.

“It appears speed was a factor,” acting Deputy Police Chief Christopher Corbett said.

Szyndlar was wearing a helmet and Rogoz was not, he said. It was unclear where they were coming from or where they were going, he said. A detailed accident reconstruction is ongoing, he said.
