NAUGATUCK — A black bear was spotted roaming a Naugatuck neighborhood early Thursday afternoon.

The bear was first spotted off of Maple Hill Road near Mulberry Street at about 12 p.m., Naugatuck police spokesman Lt. Bryan Cammarata said. He said the department received calls from residents about the bear roaming through yards for about 30 minutes. Officers also spotted the bear running through yards near Sunburst Road, Corn Tassell Road and Morning Mist Road.

Cammarata said the bear hasn’t been sighted since about 12:30 p.m., and police believe the bear went back into the woods.

Police cautioned residents that if they ever see a bear to keep a safe distance and never attempt to feed or attract bears.
