BEACON FALLS — The town is receiving some help to spruce up Riverbend Park.

First Selectman Christopher Bielik announced this month that the town received a $100,000 grant from the U.S. Department of the Interior’s Fish and Wildlife Services for work at the park along Nancy Avenue.

Bielik said the grant will be spread out over three, year-long stages.

The first stage will be the removal of invasive species of plants and the planting of canopy trees at the park. This is expected to cost approximately $69,000, Bielik said.

Bielik said these improvements will also include signage pointing people to the park because many residents don’t know about its existence.

The second stage will include the installation of a stone berm that will act as a breakwater and allow people to launch kayaks or walk into the water to fish, Bielik said. This work will cost approximately $29,000, he said.

The remaining money would be spent in the third stage for paperwork and reports.
The park consisted of parcels of land owned by the town. In February, the town took control of the parcel of land at 17 Nancy Ave., which was the last parcel it was missing to make it a continuous park.

Bielik said the grant will help the park become an enjoyable place for residents.

“The $100,000 is earmarked for these expenses and, by the time we’re finished, we should have another good, viable place in town for people to go and enjoy,” Bielik said.
