NAUGATUCK — A Massachusetts woman and a tow-truck driver from Greenwich were arrested after they allowed children to remain in a car while it was being towed over the weekend, police said.

On Saturday, police received a call at 12:45 p.m. from someone who saw children in a car that was being towed on South Main Street. The car was on the flatbed of the tow truck at the time, police said.

Naugatuck police responded and spoke to the tow-truck driver and the woman, who said there was not enough room in the cab for the children, so they let them stay in the car while it was being towed, police said. The car was being toward from Stamford, which is roughly 50 miles from Naugatuck, to Massachusetts, police said.

Two children under 12 years old were in the car, police said. They were not harmed, police said.

Myrna Oquendo, 58, of 293 Tyler St., in Springfield, Mass., the children’s grandmother, was charged with risk of injury to a child and leaving children under 12 unsupervised.
The tow-truck driver, Benny Rodriguez, 45, of 62 Pemberwick Road, Greenwich, was charged with risk of injury to a child.

Police said the Department of Children and Families was called to the scene.

Oquendo and Rodriguez were released on $5,000 bonds. They are scheduled to appear May 6 at Waterbury Superior Court.
