NAUGATUCK — Naugatuck High School students and faculty clashed on the basketball court to raise money for cancer research.

The annual Clash for the Cure was held March 26 at the high school to raise money for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, Mass.

The event, which pits students against faculty, is put on by the school’s DECA program.
The faculty pulled out a close win, 45-43.

The event sold a record-breaking 835 tickets and raised $4,389 for the cancer institute, NHS teacher and DECA advisor Tim Reilly said. The money will go towards the fundraising efforts of the Blood, Sweat, Tears, and Gears bike team that is doing the 192-mile Pan-Mass Challenge Bike Ride in August. The team, which includes Reilly, raised over $57,000 in 2014.

DECA has raised $26,925 for the cancer institute during its eight years as a program at Naugatuck High, Reilly said.

“It’s a lot of work but I’m so proud of all the DECA workers who were so organized and focused both in the promotion leading up to the game and all the work the night of the game,” said NHS senior and DECA member Jami Dwy about the Clash for the Cure. “And it was so much fun seeing the students and the teachers go at it on the court. We all know why we are on the court. Many aren’t lucky enough to have good health, so us having a fun night and raising thousands to find cures for cancer is what motivates us.”
