PROSPECT — A local organization is hoping people will run to help their neighbors.
The Prospect Lions Club will hold its 9th annual Easter Lions Run and Walk on April 11 at St. Anthony’s Church, 4 Union City Road.
The event features a 5K run and 2 mile walk. Registration for the run and walk is $20. All the proceeds benefit Prospect area residents in need.
“No money raised will go to the Lions or its administrative costs,” Lions Club President Paul Winterhalder said.
The Lions Club has raised nearly $50,000 through the event since the race began nine years ago, Winterhalder said.
“The Lions have donated to families in need of food at Thanksgiving time. In 2014 there were 35 families that benefitted from Oliver’s [Supermarket] food certificates, paid for by the Prospect Lions Road Race. The Lions have contributed to families in medical distress and have contributed to heating oil for individuals in need,” Winterhalder said.
Winterhalder said the planning for the race is coming along well and the event has attracted new sponsors.
“People have been very generous this year,” Winterhalder said.
Winterhalder expects a combined 300 runners and walkers to participate in the event.
The 5K race starts at Old Schoolhouse Road and travels a fairly challenging course of rolling hills. However, it is not the scenery or course that brings so many people out, Winterhalder said.
“The main thing that brings people out is the cause. The money all goes to local people,” Winterhalder said.
Same day registration starts at 8 a.m. April 11 in the basement at St. Anthony Church. The walk begins at 9:10 a.m. and the 5K starts at 9:30 a.m.
