NAUGATUCK — Naugatuck police charged a Waterbury man last week with robbing the Subway sandwich shop on Old Waterbury Road.

Anthony Igaunis, 46, was arrested on a warrant Feb. 27 while he was at Waterbury Superior Court. He was charged with first-degree robbery and sixth-degree larceny and held on bond.

The charges stem from the Feb. 25 robbery of the Subway. Police said Igaunis displayed a handgun and stole a small amount of cash from the restaurant.

Igaunis is the suspect in a series of local armed robberies. He was first arrested by Waterbury police Feb. 26 shortly after police said he robbed the Rite Aid on Fairfield Avenue in Waterbury using a BB gun.

He stole cash from an employee’s register, but was identified before he made his escape.

Using that identification, Waterbury police officers arrived at Igaunis’ Old Colony Drive home in Waterbury, finding Igaunis, the BB gun, cash and a red SUV that was used as a suspected getaway vehicle in several area robberies.

Igaunis confessed in a recorded statement to robbing the Subway on Old Waterbury Road in Naugatuck along with the recent robberies of Subway restaurants in Waterbury and Middlebury.

Igaunis is suspected of wearing a bandana during the robberies of Subway sandwich shops, police said he failed to wear that getup during the pharmacy holdup.
