NAUGATUCK — A man who tried to rob a liquor store on Rubber Avenue Wednesday left with nothing after the clerk refused to give him money, police said.

Police said the man walked into Paiva’s Liquors at 161 Rubber Ave. at about 5:50 p.m. He was holding a small dark object, which appeared to be a knife, and demanded cash, police said. The clerk refused to give the man any money, and the man fled the store of foot without incident, police said. Nobody was injured.

Police searched the area with a canine but didn’t find the suspect.

The man is described as white or Hispanic, heavyset, medium height, in his 30s or 40s, with no facial hair. He was wearing a hunter green jacket and a white baseball cap.

The store did not capture the man on camera, police said.

A man who matches that description robbed Cork N’ Keg liquor store at knife point at 430 Rubber Ave. on Sunday. Nobody was injured and the man walked away with an undisclosed amount of money, police said.

In both incidents, the man had a heavy ski-type jacket with either a hat or hoodie covering his head, police said.

Naugatuck police spokesman Lt. Bryan Cammarata said detectives aren’t ruling out the suspect in both incidents are the same man. However, he said, that has not been confirmed.
