BEACON FALLS — A pipe in the sprinkler system at Woodland Regional High School burst forcing the school to close on Monday.
Region 16 Superintendent of Schools Michael Yamin said a pipe in the second floor ceiling above the science wing froze and it broke early Monday morning. The sprinkler alarm went off at about 4 a.m., and that’s when officials discovered the problem, he said.
About 10 classrooms, a hallway and a teachers’ office flooded causing significant damage, Yamin said. A company is at the school cleaning up, he said. The school will open on Tuesday.
The district will go through its insurance carrier to cover the damage and the cost of the cleanup, Yamin said.
All other schools in Region 16, which oversees schools in Beacon Falls and Prospect, opened as usual on Monday. High school students will have to make up the day before the end of the school year.
“They will have to be accountable for another day,” Yamin said.
The last day of school in the district is currently June 23. Woodland would have to either open on a day that is currently scheduled off or another day would be added to the end of the school year just for high school students. The decision will be made by the Board of Education.
