KINGSTON, R.I. — John E. Benson, 71, of Kingston, R.I., passed away Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2014. He was the beloved husband of Sandra D. (Johnson) Benson.
Born in Waterbury, Conn., the son of the late Nils E. and Svea (Rosengren) Benson, he was a resident of Naugatuck, Conn. for 45 years before moving to Rhode Island two years ago; and had summered in North Eastham, Mass. since 1990.
John graduated from Springfield College in 1965. He was a science teacher at the New Fairfield Middle School for 32 years before retiring.
A private pilot since the age of 16; he was a instructor of both single and twin engine planes and was the former owner of Executive Flight Services out of Waterbury-Oxford Airport in Connecticut.
John was a long-time member of the Nauset Rod & Gun Club in North Eastham and enjoyed hunting, salt water fishing, boating and modeling. He was a parishioner of Grace Lutheran Church in Naugatuck.
Besides his wife, he leaves his son, Christopher J. Benson and his wife, Christina, of Kingston, R.I.; and his cherished granddaughter, Emma Marie. He was the brother of the late Diana Nelson.
