REGION 16 — Rachel’s Challenge will be in Region 16 for four days this week.

Rachel’s Challenge is a series of programs and strategies that equip students and adults to combat bullying and allay feelings of isolation and despair by creating a culture of kindness and compassion, according to the organization’s website. The programs are based on the writings and life of 17-year-old Rachel Scott, who was the first student killed during the 1999 shooting at Columbine High School in Colorado. Rachel’s Challenge was started by Scott’s parents.

Assemblies will be held at each school in the region, which oversees schools in Beacon Falls and Prospect, from Oct. 7 to Oct. 10. The assemblies are geared for specific age groups.

Two, hour-long community events are also part of the program. The first is Oct. 7 at 6:30 p.m. at Woodland Regional High School, 135 Back Rimmon Road, Beacon Falls. The second is Oct. 9 at 6:30 p.m. at Long River Middle School, 30 Columbia Ave., Prospect.

All community members are invited to attend one of the two community events. The recommended audience is all adults and students who are in seventh grade and above.
On-site child care will be provided for younger children.

2COM (2 Communities, 1 Mission) recommended bringing Rachel’s Challenge to the region. 2COM is a task force designed to promote healthy behaviors in the community and Region 16. The Board of Education approved the program earlier this year.
