NAUGATUCK – Waterbury police arrested a man suspected in a string of armed robberies that began Thursday night at the Subway restaurant on New Haven Road.

Kevin Savage, 25, was found by officers at about 7 p.m. Friday in his mother’s home, 443 Highland Ave., Waterbury. He was taken into custody after a “brief struggle,” Waterbury Acting Deputy Police Chief Christopher Corbett said.

Waterbury police charged Savage with first-degree robbery, first-degree reckless endangerment, criminal use of a firearm, criminal possession of a firearm, carrying a firearm without a permit and interfering with an officer.

Savage is being held at Waterbury Police Department on a $250,000 bond. Other police departments, including the Naugatuck Police Department, are expected to file charges against him as well.

Savage is the suspect in an armed robbery Thursday night at the Subway restaurant on New Haven Road.

Police responded to the restaurant at 1183 New Haven Road at about 6:20 p.m. on the report of an armed robbery. Employees reported that a man, believed to be Savage, entered the store with a handgun, then went behind the counter and pressed the gun into the side of an employee, police said.

The man took the employee’s cell phone and the cash from the register, police said. The man threw the cell phone against a window as he was leaving the store, police said.

Nobody was injured during the incident, police said.

Police believe Savage is the suspect in other robberies following the one at Subway in the Greater Waterbury area, including an armed robbery of the Shell gas station in Watertown and the robbery of a check-cashing store on Wolcott Street in Waterbury Friday morning.
