NAUGATUCK — Residents will have an opportunity Thursday to hear about the capital projects they will be asked to vote on during the election in November.
The meeting will be held at 6 p.m. in the Hall of Mayor and Burgesses on the fourth floor of Town Hall. The public is invited to hear about the following bonding proposals:
• $5.07 million, which includes $4 million for road repairs, $1 million for the Whittemore Memorial Bridge reconstruction project, and $75,000 for a street light repair on Rubber Avenue
• $6 million to pay a portion of upgrades for the sewage treatment facility
• $775,000 to relocate the Naugatuck Recycling Center off Rubber Avenue to another area, likely Cherry Street Extension
• $1 million to repair the outdoor pool at Hop Brook School
A representative will be there to discuss the treatment facility and the financial impacts of the bonding proposals. As of Tuesday, the borough’s finance department was still crunching numbers to determine what kind of impact the proposals would have on upcoming operating budgets.
Burgess Bob Neth, chair of the five-year capital committee, said $4 million could fix the worst roads in town.
The upgrades to the sewage treatment plan are needed to comply with federal and state law.
There are consequences, including potential fines from the Environmental Protection Agency or Department of Energy and Environmental Affairs, that Naugatuck could be subject to if they don’t make the repairs. Those repairs are intended to reduce the amount of mercury and phosphorus emissions. All told, the upgrades are going to cost Naugatuck about $55 million to $60 million. They must be completed by the spring of 2016.
