Letter: Driving is a privilege

To the editor,

On July 13 the Republican American reported an occurrence in Southbury. A Louisiana man claimed he was a “sovereign citizen” and told police he did not have to carry a driver’s licenses or registration. Then, among other things, he was charged with failure to stop at a stop sign and failure to yield the right of way at an intersection.

Well it seems more and more immigrants, not from Louisiana, but from other countries, have the attitude of “sovereignty” on our roads these days.

I have witnessed more and more of these people go through stop signs, red lights, fail to yield the right of way, park in fire lanes and so on. If you dare to stop and question them they will either fiercely deny it of give you a dumb look and say, “No understand English,” or “No speak English.”

If these sovereign-minded immigrants can’t read, understand or follow the rules of the road, then get them the heck off the road.

Now our government officials, and clergymen too, are ready to hand over driver’s licenses to these immigrants almost unconditionally, to make their lives easier.

What has happened to the old American way of study, learn and earn the hard way, to achieve the privilege and right to drive a car on our roads.
