NAUGATUCK — The Board of Education voted unanimously Sept. 10 to apply to the state for money for school security upgrades.
The money will be used to secure schools that did not receive upgrades following the last round of grant funding from the state.
Thus far, Naugatuck has allocated almost $1 million to safety upgrades, not including the shatterproof glass windows and other safety upgrades that are being built into the new $81 million Naugatuck High School renovate-to-new project. The plans for the shatterproof glass windows and doors at the front entrance were added following the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings.
The borough estimates to spend about $1.9 million, including state grant money, by the end of the fiscal year on school security upgrades. Much of that will go toward new front doors and classroom doors that lock from the inside.
