PROSPECT — Mathew Duman, author of “An Education in the Grotesque: The Gargoyles of Yale University,” will be exhibiting a selection of his original photographs from the book at the Prospect Library throughout September.

A reception is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 9 at the library, 17 Center St. Duman will present a slideshow during the reception that will detail the many sculptures he has discovered on Yale’s campus in New Haven.

A grotesque is a form of architectural decoration featured on the Gothic buildings of medieval Europe, while gargoyles are a specific type of grotesque that is used to channel rainwater from the roofs of these buildings.

Around the turn of the 20th century, this style was revived on American college campuses in a design called “Collegiate Gothic.” While Yale’s grotesques may look very old, many are modern in their concepts and themes.

“This decoration is a statement about the university and its history, customs and values,” Duman said in a press release.

Duman, a resident of East Haven, is a photographer and graphic designer at the Knights of Columbus in New Haven. For more information, call the library at (203) 758-3001.
