NAUGATUCK — Nobody was injured when a small fire broke out in a bathroom on the first floor of Salem Elementary School Wednesday morning.

Fire Chief Ken Hanks said a custodian quickly put out the flames with a fire extinguisher at 10:19 a.m.

The school on Meadow Street across from the Town Green was evacuated for about an hour while firefighters investigated and let the building air out.

“The students did a good job with the evacuation, which they practice regularly,” Hanks said.

There was minimal damage to the bathroom, he said. A garbage can was involved but it was too early to tell whether that is where it originated, Hanks said. Firefighters are still working to determine the cause.
