NAUGATUCK — A local man with a history of violence was arrested Saturday after threatening to shoot children inside a house on Candee Road and then assaulting the man who owns the home, police said.

At 1:37 a.m., Michael Hack, 32, of 17 Salem St., went to a house at 461 Candee Road looking for his ex-girlfriend, who had left her children in the care of a babysitter, police said. Hack’s ex-girlfriend had gone out for the night with her sister, who lived at the house, and her sister’s husband, police said.

The babysitter became frightened and called the homeowners, who told the babysitter to hide the children before calling police and heading to the Candee Road house, police said. As they drove home, Hack passed them on the street; he turned around and followed them toward the house, police said.

Hack ran out of the car and began fighting with the male homeowner, police said. He stabbed the man with a six-inch metal object and used a chain during the fight, police said. Naugatuck police arrived and immediately broke up the fight before handcuffing Hack, police said.

The other man, whose name was not released because he is considered a victim, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and refused medical attention, police said. Nobody else was injured, police said.

Hack was charged with second-degree assault, reckless endangerment, risk of injury to a child, breach of peace, carrying a dangerous weapon and driving under the influence.

He appeared at Waterbury Superior Court Monday and released on a $10,000 surety bond, according to online judicial records. He is scheduled to appear in court again July 15.

This is not the first time Hack has been arrested.

In October 2010, he pleaded no contest to two counts of second-degree assault after police charged him with stabbing an off-duty, part-time Prospect police officer, who also serves as a lieutenant in the Waterbury Fire Department. He stabbed Steven Noreika in the chest and arm with a 3-inch knife during a road-rage incident in 2006. Noreika’s wife was also injured during the incident.

Police said Hack had been drinking at a Waterbury bar before the incident and got into an argument with someone at the bar. As he was driving home in Prospect on Route 69, he noticed Noreika’s car following him and thought it was someone from the bar who wanted to continue the fight, according to a police report. The two eventually pulled over, which is when a fight ensued, according to a police report.

Hack had never been arrested before that night and called it an isolated incident in court at the time.

He was spared prison time and was ordered to take anger management classes as part of a plea deal. He was sentenced to four years’ probation.
