NAUGATUCK — Big girls need love, too.
That’s what Rosemary Rodriguez says about why she has opened a consignment boutique in downtown Naugatuck that serves women of all sizes and specializes in high-end, plus-size clothing.
“Naugatuck really didn’t have much as far as women’s clothing goes and there is really hardly anything for plus-size women,” she said. “And if there is anything for them, it’s just junk.”
In an attempt to fill the void, Rodriguez has opened Glam: A Consignment Boutique at 175 Church St. in The Annex, a complex of smaller stores on the first floor of the John M. Page building. The store carries brand names such as Ann Taylor, Michael Kors, Dooney and Bourke, Oscar de la Renta, Jessica Simpson and others. They sell dresses, pants, blouses, scarves, bags, shoes, wallets, perfumes bathing suits and more. The sizes range from zero to 14 and all the way one to 4X.
The store, which has been open since March, is currently accepting consignors. Rodriguez said she’s looking for consignors who have updated spring and fall styles. She said people can look on the store’s Facebook page for more information.
Rodriquez, who is a nurse by trade and owns another business with her husband, said she’s hopeful the store will thrive in downtown Naugatuck.
Her cousin, Ana Fernandes, is helping her because she has several years of experience in retail.
“The downtown used to be a great place to shop,” said Fernandes, a longtime Naugatuck resident. “Whenever you needed to find something for a wedding or a special occasion, this was the place to come.”
Rodriguez said she hopes the downtown will once again have that reputation.
And if there’s one thing Rodriguez doesn’t lack, it’s confidence. She believes she has the ability to succeed in this business.
Asked why she named her store Glam, Rodriguez quickly replied, “Because we’re glamorous.”
