PROSPECT — Mrs. Jean A. (Smith) Barnes, 70, of Prospect, passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday, April 6, 2014. She was the wife of Charles Barnes.

Mrs. Barnes was born in Waterbury on May 24, 1943 a daughter of the late Miller M. and Ruth (James) Smith. She was retired from Waterbury Hospital where she had worked in the one day surgery department for many years and was a member of the Prospect Congregational Church. She was a member of the Trumbull Porter Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and sang in the Prospect Congregational Church Choir for many years. She loved to cook and also enjoyed gardening and reading.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Barnes is survived by four sons, Ronald Cabral, Jr. of Morgan Hill, Calif., Dean Cabral and his wife Dawn of Watertown, Jason Cabral and his wife Jamie of Fort Meyers, Fla., and Craig Barnes of Middletown; a daughter, Cindy Athanasiou and her husband Will of Hillsborough, N.J.; a brother, Edward Smith and his wife Gloria of Meriden,; a sister, Ruth Edwards and her husband William of Bethany, eight grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, Charles Smith.

The funeral will be held on Friday, April 11, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. from the Prospect Memorial Funeral Home, 72 Waterbury Road, Prospect to Prospect Congregational Church, 25 Center St., Prospect for services at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Prospect Cemetery. Calling hours will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, April 10, 2014 from 5 to 8 p.m.
