NAUGATUCK — A 24-year-old borough woman is facing charges after police say she left her young child in the car while she went into Big Y to get some milk.

Shanaya Metz of 282 Wooster St. was charged April 6 with leaving a child under 12 years old unsupervised in a public place or motor vehicle.

Naugatuck police spokesman Lt. Bryan Cammarata said someone walking through the parking lot of Big Y on Bridge Street shortly after 6 p.m. noticed a child secured in a car seat alone in a car and called police.

Police located Metz, who told the officer she left the child alone for a few minutes while she went inside to buy milk, Cammarata said. Police estimated the child, who is about 20 months old, was left alone for about 10 minutes, he said. The door to the car was also unlocked, he said.

Metz was given a court date of April 7 to appear at Waterbury Superior Court and released on a $1,000 non-surety bond.
