NAUGATUCK — Friends and family are coming together again to support a Naugatuck teen by hosting Ryan’s Second Annual Rock ‘N’ Golf benefit.

The event will benefit Naugatuck High School junior Ryan Trochsler, who was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis before he was born.

According to the National Institute of Health, Cystic Fibrosis is a genetic disease that causes thick, sticky mucus to build up in the lungs, digestive tract and other areas of the body. This results in life-threatening lung infections and serious digestion problems.

Due to the disease, Trochsler has an aggressive daily care plan that includes 23 medications, airway clearance therapies to loosen mucus in his lungs, inhaled breathing treatments, oral antibiotics, inhaled antibiotics, inhaled steroids and medication to maintain liver function.

He often requires intravenous antibiotics for weeks at a time to treat chronic cough, lung infections and decreased lung functions. He has also developed Cystic Fibrosis-related diabetes and requires two types of insulin shots eight times a day. He checks his blood sugar six times daily.

Trochsler also requires a higher caloric intake of 3,500 to 4,000 calories per day because his body metabolizes food differently and burns a lot of calories supporting his lung function and maintaining his health.

The medical costs associated with maintaining Trochsler’s health are high. The proceeds from the Rock ‘N’ Golf event will help with those costs.

Last year’s event, raised $15,000. This year’s event will be held June 8 at Hawk’s Landing Country Club in Southington. It includes a full lunch, 18 holes of golf, dinner, live music, a “chance auction” and prizes. The cost is $135 per golfer or $500 for a foursome and includes a cart, lunch and dinner. The cost for dinner only is $45.

Sponsors and donations are being sought.
