Flormann completes leadership conference

NORTHFIELD, Vt. — Prospect resident William Flormann, a student at Woodland Regional High School, completed the Youth Leadership Conference at Norwich University in late March.

The conference is sponsored by the university, a senior military college, and the Military Order of World Wars, an organization for retired military officers. The two-day program covers numerous topics, including leadership, effective communication the Constitution, the Bill of Rights ethics and what it means to be a “citizen soldier.”

To attend, participants much have a 2.5 GPA or above and write a 500 word essay titled “The Bill of Rights and My Responsibilities.”

Participants are divided into teams and go through programs, including water survival skills class and a climbing wall, designed to develop leadership skills, self-confidence and teamwork.

Flormann is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Flormann Jr. of Prospect.

Sambrook inducted into Phi Kappa Phi

BATON ROUGE, La. — Nicole Sambrook of Naugatuck was recently initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, acollegiate honor society for all academic disciplines.

Sambrook is pursuing a degree in education at Westfield State University.

Membership is by invitation and requires nomination and approval by a chapter. Only the top 10 percent of seniors and 7.5 percent of juniors, having at least 72 semester hours, are eligible for membership. Graduate students in the top 10 percent of the number of candidates for graduate degrees may also qualify, as do faculty, professional staff, and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction.

Di Maria receives doctorate

BOSTON — Jeffrey Di Maria, of Prospect, graduated from Boston University in January with received a doctor of philosophy in electrical engineering.     

Wood inducted into international honor society

HAMDEN — Naugatuck resident Joshua Wood, a student at Quinnipiac University, was inducted into Psi Chi, an international honor society in psychology, during a March 1 ceremony.

To qualify for induction at Quinnipiac, students had to major in either psychology or behavioral neuroscience; complete at least three semesters of college credit, including nine credits in psychology; be in the top 35 percent of their class based on their overall GPA; and have a minimum psychology GPA of 3.5. The inductees were also required to have completed the university’s Introduction to Research Methods course.

Chase Collegiate honor roll

WATERBURY — Naugatuck and Prospect residents were among the Upper School and Middle School students who received academic honors for the first semester at Chase Collegiate School in Waterbury.

Emma Korowotny, Lukas Fedak, Alyson Tokarski, Aizlyn Zupkus and Isabelle Santamauro made faculty honors.

Madison Jensen, Julia Williams, Corey Plasky and Meris Rosenberg made high honors.

Matthew McClain, Samantha Crone and Miguel Esteves made honors.

Faculty honors is for students earning a 92 or above. High honors students have earned an 88 or above and honors students have earned an 85 or above.

Klabonski makes honor roll

TRUMBULL — Christopher Klabonski, of Beacon Falls, made the honor roll at St. Joseph High School for the second marking period.

Dietz helps set record, earns honor

KEENE, N.H. — Prospect resident and Woodland Regional High School graduate Eric Dietz was part of relay team for Keene State College the indoor track and field that set a school record this winter at the Open New England Championships.

The squad beat the previous school record by nearly 7 seconds with a time of 3:21.32, according to a press release.

Dietz was also named to the Little East Conference 2013-14 Winter All-Academic Team for indoor track and field. To earn a spot on the squad, a student-athlete must have a cumulative GPA of 3.3 or higher through the 2013 fall semester and be at least a sophomore academically and athletically. The student-athlete must also be a full-time member of a varsity sport and be enrolled in its institution for a full academic year.
